The City of Welland Ontario Canada
Is made up of the following communities:
Cooks Mills, Dain City, Welland
A bit of background for your personal tour pictures wall and album:
Population: 50,100
Mayor: Damian Goulbourne
The City is on the banks of the Welland River, which once provided transportation for the neutral Indians.
Later it became an integral part of the Welland Canal system, when an aqueduct was built to carry canal water over the river.
Use of the historic aqueduct ceased in 1925.
There are remnants of this engineering marvel that still exist near the Welland Court House.
The Court House was built in 1856, combined with the development of the canal, to mark the beginning of the town's prosperity.
Known as "The Rose City", it has the largest Francophone population in the region.
Its economy:
The Welland Canal has had a significant impact on Welland's economy. Clearly, the canal encouraged the establishment of a vibrant shipping industry and the railway.
Currently credit and financial services are a major player. The city is the Call centre Capital of the region.
The production of specialty steels and agricultural equipment are a formidable sector, while hydraulics, carbon and alloy forgings, rubber products and electrical appliances add to a versatile industrial base.
Fun stuff to see and do:
The Chippawa Rose Gardens feature over 50 rose beds and 1500 blooms.
With buildings as their canvas, artists from all over Canada were commissioned to create the largest outdoor gallery in the world. The result was 28 masterpieces, stunning in their size and detail.
A unique trio of events, The Rose Festival in June, the Niagara Regional Exhibition in September and the Niagara Food Festival in October make Welland one of the region's most festive towns.
The city on the canal, Welland boasts over 140 ha (350 Acres) of parks and one of the province's finest rose gardens that has earned it the moniker of "Rose City of Ontario," Welland is also known for its remarkable "outdoor gallery" of 28 giant murals that make for a colourful walking tour.
In 1988 Welland staged a Festival of Arts Murals to attract the 14 - 16 million tourists who were bypassing the town on their way to Niagara Falls.
Twenty-eight Giant murals decorate downtown buildings; the longest is 130 ft. and the tallest is three stories high.
Welland is also the home of the annual Niagara Food Festival.
Held in the downtown Market Square around the end of September or early October, this festival brings together an array of local farmers, wineries, and restaurants to provide the food.
