Attractions
Port Colborne is located on the sandy shores of Lake Erie at the southern end of the Welland Canal in the south side of the Niagara Peninsula.
Founded in 1833 with the construction of the Welland Canal, and built around the fishing and marine industry, Port Colborne has retained a quaint charm.
Not only does the city of 19,800 feature sun, sand and an easy lifestyle, it includes well-groomed golf courses, marinas, arenas, pools, and miles of sandy beaches, including the nearby Sherkston Shores, with more than three kilometres of white, sandy beachfront.
Along with its public and private beaches as well as the 900-slip marina at Sugarloaf Harbour.
The city also has an active arts community with its own theatre (the Roselawn Complex), museum, and art galleries.
Situated at the entrance to the world famous Welland Canal - a vital link to the International St. Lawrence Seaway System, Port Colborne has the privilege of being home to one of the longest locks in the world.
You'll get a firsthand look at ships from around the world - truly a unique photography attraction!
One of the best ship watching locations in Port Colborne is at Lock 8 Park that provides a beautiful landscaped viewing stand & fountain.
Lock 8, near the entrance to the Welland Canal, measures 421 meters, and is one of the longest locks in the world.
The viewing stand is in Fountain View Park an ideal location where you can take pictures of the lock activities.
Ship watching and the Welland Canal continue to be a major tourist and photos attraction in Port Colborne.
The Tourist Information Booth is also located on this site and provides tourists with up to date seasonal ship transit information.
Bring a lunch or pick up a takeout snack on the way as there are picnic facilities as well as rest rooms at this viewing site.
Further south towards Bridge 21 and West Street, it is not uncommon to find historic wooden tall ships quietly moored along the canal wall as they wait for clearance to transit the canal.
No visit to Port Colborne would be complete without a stop at the Historical and Marine Museum where over 15,000 artifacts of local and Welland Canal history are being preserved within a village setting.
You can also stop in at Arabella's Tea Room at this site; where volunteer staff will serve you homemade biscuits on elegant china.
Also in Port Colborne you'll find an eclectic mix of shopping and dining where 19th century buildings have been restored to their original charm.
This historic shopping district offers visitors' park benches to sit on and plenty of shops to stop for ice cream or lunch.
The performing arts are in fine form at the Roselawn Complex, a restored heritage mansion that is home to the long-running professional Showboat Festival Theatre as well as art displays and the increasingly popular Canadian Authors' Series.
Lake Erie's north shore is graced with long stretches of fine sand and Port Colborne's own Nickel Beach is virtually beside the Welland Canal to the east of the entrance piers.
Further east on another long sandy bay, Sherkston Shores Resort is home to one of North America's largest campsites and a host of amenities and attractions too numerous to mention.
Various other public-access beaches are also available along the Port Colborne shoreline.
Port Colborne's waterfront continues to be a recreational focal point with first class marina facilities, miles of white sandy beaches, and world-renowned fishing.
