A bit of background...
For your Around N About Niagara photos assignment personal tour pictures wall and album:

Population:       19,000
Mayor:            Ron Bodner

Originally known as Gravelly Bay, Port Colborne and the marine industry are closely connected. In a very large extent the community's development has corresponded to that of the Welland Canal.

Definitely, the canal has had a profound effect on Port Colborne and is largely responsible for the attraction of workers settlers; industry and railway lines that now populate the city.

The city was named after a Governor General of Upper Canada who's name was John Colborne.

Its economy:
Recognised as the "Canal City", it stands to reason that shipping has played a virtual role in Port Colborne's commercial development.

Towering grain elevators add a unique element to the city's skyline and used to welcome large numbers of grain-laden vessels.

At one time the city was home to the largest flourmill in the British Empire.

Currently, Inco is one of the Port's major industries. A major manufacturer of footwear, a Cement Plant and an extensive Marine and Marine Maintenance Industry add appreciably to the city's economic disposition.

Fun stuff to see and do:
Of particular significance will be the largest gathering of Tall Ships on the Great Lakes since the War of 1812. In the beginning of July Port Colborne hosts the Tall Ships Challenge. As part of this extraordinary event, some of the world's most majestic schooners, brigantines and sloops will be featured. Related activities and tours will provide a unique and exceptional photography occasions for visitors.

Situated on the south banks of the Niagara Peninsula on the shores of Lake Erie at the entrance to the Welland Canal.

Port Colborne is a shipping center on Lake Erie; it is at the southern end of Welland Canal (the 44 km-long (27 mi-long) link built to bypassing Niagara Falls), which connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. You can view canal lock activity at Port Colborne's Lock 8 from a platform.

The town (population 19,000 plus) remains an enclave for descendants of United Empire Loyalist stock.

Recording the town's rich history and development is the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, a six-building complex.

Native legends, pirates and shipwrecks all belong with Port Colborne's rich and colourful past.

Travel down Port Colborne's historic Tennessee Avenue and see the original mansions that served as summer homes for wealthy vacationers from the southern United States of America.

Enjoy great summer theatre entertainment a part of Port Colborne's cultural life.

The performing arts are in fine form at the Roselawn Complex, it's a restored heritage mansion that is home to the long-running professional Showboat Festival Theatre as well as art displays and the increasingly popular Canadian Authors' Series.

You'll also want to stroll down quaint West Street which features charming shops and café's. This historic shopping district offers visitor's park benches for a refreshing break and plenty of shops to stop for ice cream or snacks.

One of my favourite restaurants Around N' About Niagara for a Sunday morning getaway brecki is on West Street at Walters & Neptunes Restaurant, maybe we'll see you there next Sunday morning...

Ship watching and the Welland Canal continue to be a major tourist attraction in Port Colborne.

Each year thousands of Around N' About Niagara residents and tourist flock to Port Colborne to witness the exhilarating sight of (me photographing) an international "Saltie" or "Laker" as it slips through the Welland Canal (well maybe the ships have something to do with it).

One of the best ship watching locations in Port Colborne is at Lock 8 Park that provides a beautiful landscaped viewing stand a fountain with picnic facilities as well as rest rooms are also on this site.

There's a Tourist Information Booth also located at this vantage point and it provides visitors with up to date seasonal ship transit information.

Further south towards Bridge 21 and West Street, it is not uncommon to find historic wooden tall ships quietly moored along the canal wall as they wait for clearance to transit the canal.

Nickel Beach a fun photos assignment
Lake Erie's north shore is graced with long stretches of fine sand and Port Colborne's own Nickel Beach is virtually beside the Welland Canal to the east of the entrance piers.

Port Colborne's Nickel Beach provides a California style drive on beach and an ideal swimming venue. Port's historic Marine Museum chronicles significant elements of the City's nautical background.

Nickel Beach is a public facility with ample vehicle parking on the beach. Clean, warm Lake Erie water meets a mile of sandy beach providing great windsurfing, swimming and sunbathing. Shady picnic areas along with rest room facilities and a food concession stand meet all of the visitors needs.

Sherkston a travel pleasure pictures assignment
Further east on another long sandy bay, Over 7 kilometers of clean sandy beaches is home to Sherkston Shores Resort one of North America's largest campsites and a host of amenities and attractions.
