Fishing
Drop anchor, cast your line and have some fishing or other outdoor fun. Discover Niagara's fishing locations and other outdoor activities, for the real outdoors in you.

Niagara is a fishing paradise, with over 175 miles (121 km) of shoreline on Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Niagara River also providing many occasions for great photos.

Lake Ontario is teaming with salmon and trout, while lake Erie's warmer water favour perch, small mouth bass and pickerel.

Popular spots for shore fishing include Port Dalhousie, St.Catharines Marina, Jordon Harbour, the Niagara River at Queenston, and at the Niagara Whirlpool - the world's largest fishing hole!

In winter, ice fishing is popular on Martindale Pond (St.Catharines), Gravelly Bay (Port Colborne) and Jordon Harbour (Lincoln).

Common catches include bass, perch and crappies.

The CanAm Walleye Challenge in Fort Erie and the St.Catharines Salmon Derby draw hundreds of anglers who complete for big cash prizes and merchandise.

A June Catfish Derby appeals to the smaller fry.

A fishing license is usually required to fish in Ontario, available through local fish and tackle shops and Canadian Tire stores.

Hiking, birding and photography
From the Niagara River at Queenston the Niagara Escarpment extends westward parallel to and south of the shores of Lake Ontario.

The escarpment crosses into Ontario Canada in the Niagara Peninsula where it is cut by the Niagara River. The Niagara River began eroding the 11-kilometer Gorge between the edge of the Escarpment and Niagara Falls about 12,000 years ago, thus exposing the bedrock.

These rocks are about four hundred million years old.

The Niagara Escarpment in the Niagara Peninsula is powerfully noticeable going west along the shores of Lake Ontario then it winds its way northward through more farmland and urban areas.

In this long-settled part of the province, where concentrated farming and growing community growth leave little room for nature, the Escarpment's protected forests, talus slopes and cliff faces are particularly important, both as a nearby retreat for residents and as a place for wildlife.

The forests Around N’ About Niagara (The Peninsula) are some of the most beautiful anywhere along the Escarpment's length and offer many great occasions for photos.

The Niagara Peninsula is one of Canada's prime agricultural areas.

Rich mineral soils and the clement effects of Lakes Erie and Ontario are two essential factors to the excellent growing conditions.

The Escarpment also creates an ideal climate that allows the growing of tender fruit such as apricots, peaches and premium wine grapes.

And a great climate for tourism Around N' About Niagara where you will find more and more things to see and do: world-class theatre, the casino, the Butterfly Conservatory, and wine tours, not to mention The Falls.

But if you want to add a good hike and some quality nature photography experiences to that package, visit the "Parks" Around N' About Niagara and in the other Communities Outdoor Activities listings for some nature-based tourist and photography attractions.

Many opportunities for cycling, hiking and photography can be found Around N' About Niagara (The Peninsula), with several trails to choose from.

The Bruce Trail, 800 Kilometers along the interesting and sometimes breathtaking Niagara Escarpment is always ready for photographs, people visit it all year round.

Conceived in 1960 and opened in 1967, it is the oldest and longest hiking trail in Canada.

The Trail traverses public land roads and road allowances, land purchased by the Bruce Trail Association, and private land whose owners generously allow the trail on their property.

Volunteers from the nine local Bruce Trail Clubs maintain it.

The 782 Kilometer long Bruce Trail follows the general line of the Niagara Escarpment through some of Southern Ontario's most beautiful terrain.

From Queenston Heights in Niagara to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula.

This ridge that runs from Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula in the north, to Queenston at the Niagara River in the south, provides spectacular views for photos of the cities and towns at the western end of Lake Ontario.

Many of the escarpment parks include picturesque waterfalls that plummet over the cliffs.

All are connected by the Bruce Trail, a hiking path that runs the length of the escarpment.

(For more information about the Escarpment and trails see our *Niagara Escarpment Guide* on the main menu)

For this, the *Around N’ About Niagara* magazine we are interested in the Queenston to Grimsby portion of the Bruce Trail.

The southern terminus of the Bruce Trail is at the stone Cain in Queenston Heights Park.

Located about 14 km from Niagara Falls (our *Attractions Central*), the park is perched on the north side of a deep gorge carved, over the centuries by the Niagara River.

The park features a monument to Major General Isaac Brock, who was killed here during the War of 1812.

The hiker will encounter other reminders of the war along the Trail west toward Grimsby.

Along this route you'll encounter many bird species and discover plenty of nature and other worthwhile occasions to take photos

The Niagara peninsula is known as the Fruitland of Ontario because most of Ontario's fruit is grown here; apples, pears, peaches, cherries and grapes.

This is also the area where most of Ontario's wines are produced by both small and large wineries.

On the way through St.Catharines and Thorold, the hiker will pass all four of the Welland Canals built in the last 150 years, from the first canal with its narrow wooden locks, to the fourth canal with its massive twin locks.

Here, on one of the major waterways of the world, the hiker can watch and take pictures of ships from all over the world travel by.

The Trail begins to travel through a woodland belt and across farmland to Grimsby and beyond where we leave the trail in the Around N’ About Niagara (the Peninsula) magazine.
