Fun Stuff to see and do lineup
Around N' About Niagara (The Peninsula)
This is each Communities listings lineup for: Attractions, Rides & Tours, Parks, Museums, Historical sights, Accommodations, Dining, Nightlife & The Arts, Shopping, Golfing, Outdoor Activities, Festivals & Events, Wineries, Amusements, Of Interest & Services
Around N' About Niagara guide to Niagara Falls Attractions
City of Niagara Falls Attractions
We'll talk about other fun things to see and do later in other *Around N' About Niagara* Magazine sections noted above in the Communities listings lineup. I won't forget! Promise! And that's a fact!
Attractions - the act or power of attracting - persons or things that attract by arousing interest - draw, lure, enticement, pull, inducement, allurement and so on.
Well Niagara falls is, has and does that...
First we'll concentrate on all the known ways we've discovered (Maybe you'll discover some of your own, who knows?) to view, experience and photograph the mighty Niagara Falls...
That's why listings of the sights (Attractions) here in the intro are not in typical alphabetical order as in the run of the mill guide you may find on the shelf.
Your *Around N' About Niagara* Magazine lists sights (Attractions) to view and photograph in their relationship to *The Falls* and the NPC (Niagara Parks Commission) Queen Victoria Park.
All other stuff to see and do, view and photograph are considered side tours from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls (The Falls) our *Attractions Central* for this the part of the magazine.
In other words for this part of the magazine *Niagara Falls* the Niagara River waterfalls is our *Attractions Central* in this Guide all assignment (should you decide to accept them) tours to view and photograph other fun stuff to see and do, start from the mighty Niagara Falls (The Falls).
After all, that's the *Attraction* (the sight) you came to see and take pictures of. Right?
The Falls are magical by day and especially memorable at night. You'll remember nature's daytime spectacle and this glowing nighttime sight will take your breath away to be remembered for the rest of your life! And that's a fact!
= = = Side Bar = = =
Don't forget your Camera when you travel around N About Niagara and Niagara Falls (see our Guide Travel Tips A - Z under "C" for camera and travel photo tips).
And remember if you travel in Niagara using U.S. dollars you'll find everything is a relative bargain to you here in Canada due to the rate of exchange on our Canadian dollar. At times a while back we were paying 50% to buy U.S. dollars to make purchases in the U.S.
So! Your vacations and/or weekend getaways here *Around N' About Niagara*, your travel expenses and supplies purchases made in Canada are a real bargain. Note: since the 2003 war on Sadam our Canadian dollar has gained a few cents the exchange rate is around 30 cents on the U.S. dollar.
Check with your bank before traveling.
= = = End of Side Bar = = =
Hold on to your hat!
Because the nighttimes are particularly breathtaking when the nightly light show begins.
Since 1925, this light show has been delighting visitors year round. Beginning at various times throughout the year, the Falls are transformed.
Do you really want this Techie stuff?
Well OK! At night the Falls are illuminated by 21 colored xenon lights.
18 lights are located at the Illumination Tower, opposite the American Falls. Each bulb has the brilliance of 250 million-candle power!
And the Fireworks!
Well you just have to see the whole extravaganza the lights and Fireworks, it's a must see spectacle.
And don't allow winter to put you off vacations Around N' About Niagara. The Winter Festival of Lights is a real stunner.
Seventy trees are illuminated with 34,000 lights in the QVP parklands near the Rainbow Bridge.
In season The Falls are illuminated nightly from 5 to 10 PM, late November through mid-January.
Take a Journey Behind The Falls
No trip to Niagara Falls (The Falls) is complete without a visit under the falls.
Thrilling and awesome, this close-up experience of The Falls is unforgettable!
Journey Behind the Falls tours begin at the Table Rock House, in Queen Victoria Park they're Open Year round (Limited winter viewing) children 5 & Under are admitted Free.
A One-Day Niagara Falls Attractions Pass is also available. There is Shuttle Bus Service available to this attraction.
The location provides Partial Handicap facilities and has Public Washrooms
Another exciting angle to photograph and view The Falls from is just down river north on River road at the foot of Clifton.
You can drive or take the shuttle but I recommend you walk the exhilarating few hundred meters from The Falls to...
The Maid of the Mist
This too is part of your photo assignment should you choose to accept it.
Also see Around N' About Niagara Falls section *Rides & Tours*
After that you'll probably want to take a little break. Grab a snack and take it across River Road to the raised garden area (to the right of, when facing up Clifton Hill) adjacent north of Clifton Hill to the garden for a quiet sit down and another pictures occasion of our *Attractions Central* I enjoy this sanctuary area the flowers, birds and just steps away the people scurrying to who knows where. (Don't they know they're on holiday?) Maybe we'll see you there!
That was refreshing, and the pictures. Fantastic!
Let's head back towards Table Rock, The Falls and in particular to Murray Street. On this walk back though let's stay on this (west) side of River Road to take our pictures of The Falls. This angle will include the trees, flowers (in season), traffic and the people doing their tourist thing, what a perspective for that pictures wall and album.
At Murray Street we'll take the climb up the hill to the laneway along the...
Skylon Tower
Taking you via the loading area to the parking lot and entrance where you can purchase a ride to the tower observation deck.
Rising 775 feet above the falls, the tower offers one the best viewing spots of the great Niagara River, The Falls and the city.
The clear view elevator ride takes you to the indoor /outdoor observation deck that provides a great location for pictures of this area view.
That was exhilarating! On the way back to Table Rock and The Falls to your next photography location at...
Oh what the heck!
We're on holiday let the family take in the amusements and the shopping here for a while (I know I'd rather be outdoors too). We can always take up from here tomorrow. Can't we?
OK! Let's head back towards The Falls the way we came up via the laneway and Murray Street to River Road (we did the tourist pictures thing at The Falls so) at turn right (South) staying across River Road from The Falls so we can take photos of the whole scene.
We'll walk south along the escarpment base to...
The Horseshoe Falls Incline Railway
(Across River Road from Table Rock and The Falls)
Here we'll ride up the face of the escarpment and another pictures view session from the...
Minolta Tower Center
Where you can take some photos of The Falls at the tower base or 525 feet above the base of The Falls that affords a panoramic view of the Horseshoe Falls and the surrounding area.
If you like you could spend some time at the tower amusements area and do some souvenir shopping there or in the collection of shops on Oakes Drive the street at the base of the tower. (Check out the Shopping, Dining and Amusements sections of this magazine Niagara Falls guide)
Oh! Before we head back to the car, bus, or hotel, whatever.
There's another angle for pictures of The Falls from up here on the escarpment you should see.
From the Minolta tower take a walk to the incline railway car parking lot off Portage road. On your right you'll see a railed path along the edge of the escarpment a 100 meters or so (north) along this path you will come to a small viewing area where NPC has cleared the trees and shrubs to allow a view of The Falls for more great pictures of our *Attractions Central*.
Now you can head back to wherever and whatever to go to our next Attractions photos assignment (should you decide to accept it) at...
Great Gorge Adventure
To experience the tremendous power and beauty of the mighty rapids, a quick elevator trip will transport you to the white-water boardwalk in the gorge on the edge of the mighty Niagara River at its narrowest point.
Another perspective for some exciting pictures of the raging water and the few thousand years of erosion history indicated in the layered water carved gorge walls.
After the world famous Niagara Falls, the Great Gorge Adventure presents the most awesome spectacle of the Niagara River.
To get here you could walk, it's about 3 km (north) from The Falls, you can take the Shuttle Bus Service, drive by car or bicycle if you're making this a self-guided tour, or you could join a guided tour (check out *Rides & Tours* for listings).
What's next?
Maybe not as sensational as The Falls or the roaring gorge though this NPC Attractions is guaranteed to provide you with a thrill especially if (like me) you are uneasy about heights.
Here's a bit different approach to taking pictures of the Niagara River and another of its diverse features from...
The Spanish Aero Car
At The Whirlpool a right angle bend in the Niagara River on its route to Lake Ontario (Check out the Rides & Tours listings)
Ride the cable car across the gorge meanwhile taking photos over The Whirlpool or (like me) take pictures on solid ground from the viewing deck (even from there my tummy gets butterflies and churns).
Wow! More great pictures for your Around N' About Niagara travel wall and album.
From The Whirlpool the next photography occasions along the Niagara River Parkway in Niagara Falls are a fantastic array of NPC Parks that take us naturally into Niagara-on-the-lake
Check out Niagara Falls *Parks* listings for these and more...
Niagara Glen
A great place for a break from the hustle and bustle, and a very relaxing walk with some nature and tourism photography opportunities thrown in for your album or whatever your plans are for the pictures you take.
The Glen is located 7 km. north of The Falls (Niagara Falls) our *Attractions Central*
The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens
Several hundred students have created, over a 60-year period, one of North America's most outstanding landscapes and botanical collections here at The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens.
Butterfly Conservatory
The grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are home to one of North America's largest collection of free flying butterflies.
Here you have a rare opportunity to watch and photograph numerous species of butterflies fluttering regally among nectar producing flowers.
It's a year round showcase of a wide variety of butterflies from around the world living in lush, rain forest like environment.
Floral Clock
One of the popular sights to view and photograph is the 40 ft. diameter-working clock that is one of the largest in the world.
Using upwards of 20 thousand small plants that are placed close together, elaborate designs are created and changed twice a year.
While enjoying the annual and perennial gardens surrounding this 50 year-old structure, be sure to listen for the Westminster chimes that strike every 15 minutes.
Centennial Lilac Garden
This collection contains over 1,200 plants with over 200 different varieties.
Anticipated time of bloom is in the latter part of May.
Niagara Parks Greenhouse
The tropical houses at the Niagara Parks Greenhouse contain a wide variety of plants from all over the world, which are set amongst waterfalls and pools.
A small cactus collection helps show the diversity of plants.
Over 70 free-flying tropical songbirds will serenade you as they flit among the plants.
Located 500m south of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls (our *Attractions Central*), this attraction was constructed by The Niagara Parks Commission in 1945.
During the winter, you can escape to a place that explodes with fabulous colors.
In early spring, your senses will be exhilarated with the sights and scents of the forced bulbs, butterfly flowers, lady's slippers and primroses.
The displays are changed eight times a year and are designed to celebrate the seasons or holidays.
