This route will take you along the water front directly to the Old Fort Erie Historical sight...

Fort Erie the town is located at the extreme southeast tip of the Niagara Peninsula; known as the "Gateway to Canada," you can transport yourself back in time to the War of 1812 at the historic Fort Erie that gives the city its name.

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, at the mouth of the mighty Niagara River, Fort Erie lies directly across the border from Buffalo New York.

The Town of Fort Erie Ontario Canada
Is made up of the following communities:
Amigart Downs, Bay Beach, Buffalo Heights, Crescent Park, Crystal Beach, Douglastown, Edgewood, Fort Erie, Fort Erie Beach, Mulgrave, Oakhill Forest, Point Abino, Ridgemount, Ridgeway, Rose Hill Estate, Stevensville, Snyder, Thunder Bay, Wavecrest, Waverly Beach

A bit of background for your personal travel pictures wall and album: Town of Fort Erie
Population:       28,500
Mayor:            Wayne Redekop

Fort Erie covers 168.3 square kilometers and has a population of 28,500 or thereabout with a seasonal influx of 10,000 summer residents.

It is fitting that the Peace Bridge from Buffalo to Canada crosses at Fort Erie.

Here, where the town originated in 1764, it was established as a British military outpost and entrusted to keep the peace along the Niagara River.

Fort Erie being located next door to the United States of America as it is makes it one of the prime Canadian gateways welcoming millions who travel cross the bridge each year.

Its economy:
Although Fort Erie's Immediacy to Lake Erie and the Niagara River have been significant in its development aerospace technology has played a major roll in Fort Erie's commerce.

In this sector Fleet Industries remains one of the town's largest employers. Euro-copters' modern facility also has had an important economic impact on the community.

Of more general impact, the emergence of Ontario's gaming industry and the establishment of the Fort Erie slots and Race Track have provided a major economic boon for the town.

Exhilarating fun stuff to see and do
You can take in the excitement of the horse races as well as the slots at the Fort Erie Race track, one of the oldest and most beautiful thoroughbred tracks in North America.

From Canada Day, July 1st to Independence Day July 4th, the Fort Erie Friendship Festival celebrates the Canada/U.S.A. partnership with concerts, fireworks and colourful festivities on both sides of the border.

The Loch Sloy Highland Games offer a wonderful insight to the Scottish culture while the surrounding villages of Crystal Beach, Ridgeway and the Bridgewater Station District offer their own distinctive charm to this area.

The Mildred Mahoney Doll House Gallery, the Native Indian Poe-Wow and an International Air Show are notable attractions, which enhances the community's profile.

A bit of Around N' About Niagara history
Fort Erie has a rich and colourful history that can be traced back some 12,500 years.

Archeological sites along the Niagara River show evidence of inhabitants as early as 11,000 B.C.

More recently notable, Fort Erie is where a group of aboriginal Indians known as the "Neutrals" made their home in the early 1600's.

During the War of 1812, Fort Erie played host to the first Siege of the war on Canadian soil.

After having been destroyed by retreating American troops during the course of that war, the Fort was restored in 1930 and remains to this day one of the Town's proudest landmarks and its namesake.

More recently, during a period prior to the American Civil War, Fort Erie's border location, it has been revealed, made the town an important station on the Underground Railroad.

Thousands of slaves hoping to escape the oppression of slavery gained their freedom by crossing into Canada via Fort Erie.

Fort Erie's strategic location has, and continues to play, an important role in shaping the history and lifestyle of the local area.

If you travel from Toronto International Airport...
Fort Erie is about 155 km (96 mi) south of Toronto via the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way)

From our *Trip Central* the Falls, travel south via the Niagara River Parkway into Fort Erie onto Lakeshore road to Old Fort Erie onto Dominion Road through the communities of Fort Erie Beach, Waverly Beach, Crescent Beach, Rose Hill Estate, buffalo Heights, Wavecrest into Ridgeway

The name Ridgeway refers to its geographic location along the limestone ridge running through this area.

Ridge Road follows this ridge and was one of the first two wagon trails in Bertie Township, originally running from Miller's Creek, on the Niagara River, to Point Abino.

There was another wagon trail recorded in the late 1700's it ran along the Niagara River as the Niagara river Parkway does today.

Ridgeway, originally settled by Loyalists in the late 1700's, was a farming community.

When the Buffalo, Brantford and Goderich Railway was built it in the 1850's through Ridgeway, service industries developed around the train stop on Ridge Road.

As a result of this railway service industry a business district developed and spread north along Ridge towards Dominion Road.

In 1866 during the Fenian Invasion Ridgeway received worldwide attention.

Here is where Anglo-Canadian and Irish American forces fought the "Battle of Ridgeway" at that time in Around N' About Niagara history.

The Point Abino post office was moved to Ridgeway in 1873 to be closer to the railroad, and was of course renamed the Ridgeway post office.

The following year, a town hall for Bertie Township was built on Ridge Road, even though Ridgeway residents opposed it. Making Ridgeway the seat of municipal government for Bertie Township.

Ridgeway was never incorporated as a town and while its political demise occurred in 1970, as part of Bertie Township, its economic strength as a diversified village carry on today.

This is the two-story limestone building that is presently home to the Fort Erie Historical Museum.
